What is Web Hosting ?
Web Hosting is a service provided by an IT company (usually called: ‘Web hosting Company’, ‘Web Host’ or just HOST),
which consists in hosting a domain name/web site on a machine (a computer unit) called web-server, in order to make visible on the Internet that particular web site, basically all the web-pages of that domain/web site become visible on the Web Wide World.
- The web site files are hosted (stored) on a web-server’s hard-drive =>
- =>the web-server is co-located into a rack based in a data-centre =>
- => the data-centre is connected permanently to the Internet (or ‘world-wide-web’).
- People are then able to access that particular web-hosted domain/web site from anywhere in the world on any device that has an Internet connection (PC, laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc).
To host a website on the internet, an individual or company would normally need to have their own web-server connected to a fast Internet connection. As not all companies had the budget or expertise to do this, today there are out there a lot of web hosting companies offering web hosting services on their own servers, so the clients don’t need to own the necessary infrastructure required to have the website online and maintain it. The owners of the websites (also called webmasters), would be able to administrate a website or more (some even able to create a website), that would be hosted on the web hosting service’s server and published to the world wide web by that particular web hosting service / company.
